Yulan Thomas, RNC, Education Committee

H.I.D.E. & S.E.E.K.! IS WINNING PRAISE from infection control professionals. A group of ICPs was selected to rate the video on its content and value to diverse healthcare audiences. Most of the evaluators (98 percent) gave H.I.D.E & S.E.E.K.! excellent ratings for its usefulness in educational programs, especially orientations to infection control principles.

H.I.D.E & S.E.E.K.! Eight Strategies for Preventing the Spread of Infection, a new educational video produced by Health Media International and reviewed by APIC, presents important infection prevention concepts. The letters in H.I.D.E & S.E.E.K.! stand for eight principles of infection control prevention: Handwashing, Immunization, Drug Safety, Eating Safety, Safe Personal Practices, Environment, Elderly Care, and Kids.

The 28-minute video presents a lot of information, yet by using basic terms, the concepts are easily grasped by the viewer, regardless of his or her background. The production targets consumers, healthcare and public health professionals, doctors' and dentists' office staff, schools employees, daycare center workers and operators, long-term care staff, and employees in clinics, libraries, and community outreach programs. Insurance and HMO companies, occupational health, and restaurants and hotels also could use this product for employee training.

Special effects illustrate where microorganisms hide, methods to seek them out, and transmission prevention. The video highlights the global impact of infectious disease, associated mortality and morbidity, antibiotic resistance, and basic infection control practices. The production is highly entertaining-and maybe a little frightening-and because it is set in the home, daycare centers, long-term facilities, hospitals, and offices, it should have broad appeal. Its low cost makes this product accessible to community health and patient programs.
