Syphilis.  Based on the Treponema pallidum pathogen, this necktie design is a work of art. Syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a spirochete, was, at one time, as feared as AIDS. Today, while we have the potential to eradicate this disease, we still see outbreaks which remind us of this serious threat.

Syphilis can cause serious heart abnormalities, mental disorders, neurologic problems, blindness and death. It is characterized by distinct stages, usually over a period of years.

A back-of-tie "Awareness Note" and a source citation are incorporated in the pattern design, which reads:

"SYPHILIS is a sexually-transmitted disease characterized by several clinical states. It has periods of varying infectivity, and can effect any tissue or vascular organ. Infection may lead to greater risk of acquiring or spreading the HIV virus, if exposed."
