But for a mere chromosome or two, we could all be hanging from trees, or in gatherer mode for Swiss cheese. On the other hand, thanks to those very chromosomes, we're mostly what M. Nature intended - decidedly descendent from those we spawn and love. What better way to celebrate connections than a genomic gift of silken proportions?

3. CULINARY KUDOS
Culinary Kudos to Connecticut's New Britain High School students for their great performance in the National ProStart Invitational. Sponsored by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation, ProStart is a two-year building curriculum that blends both classroom learning and work experience to prepare future culinary and management leaders. Teacher and team leader Nann Thomson's charges did some screamin' cooking and restaurant problem solving, all the while styling in signature IA "Foodborne 6" couture.
Congrats to the sartorially excellent performance by the NBHS foodies!

4.VIRTUAL FOOD SAFETY
Speaking of the galley, "Ask Karen" if you want to know all about food handling, preparation, storage and safety. Karen is an ageless, decidedly botox-free "virtual representative" who oversees the kitchens of the USDA website, dedicated to prevention of foodborne illness. Type in your question, click "Ask" and you'll get timely and accurate answers to your deepest culinary neuroses. A great educational and safety resource. www.fsis.usda.gov
5. TALK ABOUT AN ODD COUPLE...
Analysis of tissues from deep inside the femur of an eastern Montana Tyrannosaurus rex has revealed a DNA link to - no, not gorillas, lions, or other kingly species - but to ...er, chickens! Scientists have identified proteins in a fossilized T. rex which indicate that preservation of DNA may well extend to the cellular level even in a 68 million year-old! In fact, several of the protein 
sequences were related closely to the humble KFC alumnus, which gives way to a very troubling mental picture. In any case, for you Jurassic groupies, our T.rex design, directly patterned from Montana State U. bone scans, might serve to preserve the big guys'macho, but now highly suspicious, image.

6. GIANT MICROBES® MAXI-DEMIC
Wow, these little critters lit up Al Gore's highway after our last newsletter. As long as you're trolling for the perfect D & G gift, why not consider these cuddly contagions for little Billy or Buffy while you're at it? Great educational and awareness tools for the whole fam. The topical hang tags are especially timely and clever.
P.S. Beginning in June, you'll be able to order the little Giants directly from the IA website. In the meantime, amble over to the Giantmicrobe site and have some furry fun.
7. BURPANOL
Lastly, what Father's Day edition would be complete without some manly beer talk: we hear that scientists are teaming with an Aussie beer maker (Foster's) to generate energy from brewery wastewater and bacteria. Acting as a "microbial fuel cell," the cell is essentially a battery in which bacteria consume water-soluble brewing waste to produce electricity. Cricky, mate, filling the tank with a six pack does sound like a plan!
