Plague (Black Death) is a historically important bacterium known formally as Yersinia pestis. It is 'credited' with annihilating a third of Europe's population in the 14th Century. Transmitted by fleas, it survives even today as a potential killer. Prevention centers on improved sanitary conditions and eradication of ratty reservoirs.  Giant Microbes¨ are an awareably great way to introduce serious public health issues to young (and young at heart), tackling tough subjects with a bit of twinkle. They may skew the approach a little, but not the message: that awareness is important, no matter what age the awaree!
