HIV is a virus that kills cells that help the body fight off infection. First identified in the early 1980's, HIV and the disease it causes - AIDS - has become a world-wide pandemic, infecting and taking the lives of millions. There is no vaccine, and no known cure, although new medications allow people living with AIDS to live longer and healthier lives.  Giant Microbes¨ are an awareably great way to introduce serious public health issues to young (and young at heart), tackling tough subjects with a bit of twinkle. They may skew the approach a little, but not the message: that awareness is important, no matter what age the awaree!
