Syphilis (the “Pox”) …is a sexually-transmitted disease caused by a spirally shaped bacteria called a spirochete. The Great Pox has an infamous place in history, and is characterized initially by a chancre, followed by very distinctive stages that may quietly get nastier over many years. Antibiotics are effective in treatment, but resistant strains are beginning to appear. Syphilis infections increase risk of HIV infections by up to five times. Good reasons to make good choices!  Giant Microbes¨ are an awareably great way to introduce serious public health issues to young (and young at heart), tackling tough subjects with a bit of twinkle.
